Working in Far Hills

Far Hills is horse country in the truest sense. The village sits in a fold of the Somerset Hills about fifteen minutes from my Neshanic Station studio, and the land around it — Moorland Farm, the open ground that hosts the Far Hills Race Meeting each autumn, the paddocks running back off Route 202 — gives you scale and light you simply cannot manufacture in a studio.

The country around Far Hills rewards early morning and the last hour before dusk, when low sun rakes across open paddock and the tree lines go long. For estate and equestrian work the open ground off Route 202 and the lanes toward Peapack give room to work at distance, which matters when horses are involved. The village itself, small as it is, offers stone, ironwork and mature planting within a short walk of the station.
