Working in Harding Township

Harding is quiet, wooded and deliberately unhurried — New Vernon village at its centre, the Great Swamp along its southern edge, and some of the largest private properties in Morris County set well back from the road. It is about a half hour from my Neshanic Station studio and it photographs unlike anywhere else nearby.

Harding gives you two very different registers within a few miles. The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge edge is open, reedy and enormous, which suits family sessions that want air and distance. New Vernon village is the opposite — tight, historic, low buildings and mature trees. Properties here tend to sit long distances back from the road, so exterior and estate work usually means walking the grounds first.
